Livigno is located in the district of Sondrio and represents the municipality most north located of Lombardia territory. With almost 6000 inhabitants Livigno is the most populated among the 26 italian municipality located over 1500 meters above the sea level. The town rises on a plateau surrounded by high mountains in the heart of Retic Alps and develops along the road that runs for more than 15 km at the bottom of the valley crossed the Spöl river. Because of the geomorphologic characteristic of the place, in some terms similar to Himalayan ones, Livigno is also known as “the little Tibet” offering unique landscapes and climatic conditions in Italy. Also the food and the kitchen is affected by the high mountain climate conditions and the peculiarity of the geographic location of the town, that far from the main communication routes, has contributed maintaining unchanged through times culinary habit.
During the winter there are many people who reach this place for a holiday in the snow but the summer is full of initiatives and activities for those who wants to leave the town hot and sultry to take refuge in the cool mountain climate of Livigno.
Here the opportunities of choice for mountain biking are endless, the land is rich in numerous valleys that run through Stelvio National Park and Engadine Switzerland in a real mountain bike paradise with over 100 km of trails.
A further source of tourist attraction is the special no tax area in which Livigno is located, goods sold are exempt from VAT and this has contributed to the development of a tourism business that moves almost exclusively to buy at more favorable prices.

HOW TO GET THERE

To reach Livigno is necessary to have a valid document for travel abroad.

Livigno is accessible by car from several directions.
From South-East for those coming from Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria, through Foscagno pass (2291 m) and Eira (2210 m) along the SP 301, which connects Alta Valtellina and Bormio, crossing the village of Trepalle.
North-East for those coming from Veneto and Emilia Romagna, via Route Gallo, linking it to the Lower Engadine and Austria and beyond Step Forno (d. 2070), Val Monastery (Switzerland) and Val Venosta in South Tyrol.
South-west coming from Sondrio-Tirano (Italy) and Upper Engadine - St. Moritz - Zurich (Switzerland), through Forcola (m. 2315).

Livigno is also reachable by train.

From the rest of Europe through the Rhaetian Railway - Train Rhätische (www.rhb.ch) with a stopover in Zernez and bus (Autoservizi Silvestri - Livigno 0342 996 283)
